Veneti
The Veneti (Enetoi in Greek) were an ancient people who inhabited today's northeastern Italy (near Venice). They spoke the Venetic language, a language which was either an Italic language or very close to the Italic branch. Venetic may also have been close to Illyrian, though this Illyrian theory is based mostly on similar proper names, since no inscriptions in the Illyrian language are known. The ancient Veneti are not to be confused with the later Venetians, who traditionally speak Venetian, a Romance language. See also |
