Vaxholm is a city of the Stockholm archipelago in central Sweden. It has 4,900 inhabitants and is the seat of Vaxholm Municipality.

A total of 64 islets belong to the municipality, as does the peninsula Bogesundslandet. Its central locatation in the archipelo has led to its slogan "Vaxholm - the capital of the archipelago".

Besides the town Vaxholm, the only other town is Resarö, pop 2,050. The somewhat famous village Ytterby is also situated in the municipality.

Not until 1912 was it allowed to build houses from other matierals than wood.

In Vaxholm lays the fortress of Vaxholm, built between 1836-1863, and perhaps the most notable thing in the municipality.

The municipality also has a significant amount of tourism. Ships transporting passangers between the islands began running on a daily basis in in 1850's. Today, many of islands (among them the main island Vaxholm) can be reached be bridges from the mainland.
