Turehu live in Rangiawhiao, in the tribal area of ngati kahu. The story of kahukura explains the origin of man in the pasific obtaining the use of fishing nets form the turehu. It is told in old Maori tradition that after the turehu were tricked by Kahukura some traveled to the taranaki district in the west of new zealand while the others remained in Rangiawhiao but moved inland. And their they remain to this day.
