It is a leading supplier of application-specific analog integrated circuits (ICs), wireless and computer peripheral ASICs, automotive and digital consumer application specific standard products (ASSPs), MPEG-2 decoder ICs, discrete semiconductor products and Non-volatile memory including NOR Flash memory. ST also designs and produces microcontrollers. Since 2001 ST has been involved in developing MEMS.

The ST group was formed in June 1987 from the merger of two semiconductor companies: the Italian company SGS Microelettronica and Thomson Semiconducteurs, the semiconductor arm of the French company, Thomson. In May 1998, the company changed its name from SGS-THOMSON Microelectronics to STMicroelectronics. ST also includes, amongst others, the US company formerly known as Mostek and the British company, Inmos.

In 2004, ST's net revenues were US$8,760 million and net earnings were US$601 million.
