Rhoiptelea chiliantha is the only Species of Rhoiptelea, and the only member of the family Rhoipteleaceae. It is most closely related to the walnut family Juglandaceae.
It was discovered in 1932, being found in southern China (Guangxi, Guizhou, Yunnan) and northern Vietnam.
It is a Tree growing to 20 m tall, superficially resembling a Wingnut in appearance, with alternate, compound pinnate leaves 15-40 cm long with 9-11 leaflets, each leaflet 6-9 cm long, with a serrated margin. The flowers are compound catkins 15-30 cm long, the female catkins maturing into numerous small nutlets 2-3 mm long, with a 5-8 mm wing on either side of each nutlet.
