Oguma

An archetype in the Fire Emblem series, an Oguma character is usually a hero-classed character who starts off unpromoted and introduced early in the game. They tend to focus on HP, strength, and defense, which is also attributed to the Kain archetype. Their stat growth is highest in HP. The Oguma archetype also vies in tight competition with the Nabarl and Maric archetypes. The strength growths of Ogumas are close to those of Nabarls. Ogumas are usually automatically recruited playable characters.

This archetype is named after a character from Fire Emblem: Ankoku Ryuu to Hikari no Tsurugi and Fire Emblem: Monshou no Nazo, named Oguma, who embodies the core principles of Ogumahood. For every new entry to Fire Emblem series, the Oguma archetype gets an increase in resistance growth rate. Therefore, each subsequent Oguma character has higher resistance growth rate than the Oguma character of that game's predecessor. As for appearance, Ogumas usually have light-colored hair, usually blond or green.

List of Ogumas

  • Holyn - From Fire Emblem: Seisen no Keifu, he is a gladiator from Sophara Castle of the Kingdom of Isaac. He is a very distant relative of his female Nabarl counterpart Aira. He has the Gekkouken (Moonlight Sword) skill, which negates the enemy's defense occasionally. He is recruited in Chapter 2 when he is beaten in the arena by a member of Sigurd's army, usually Sigurd or Cuan, since they are likely to be one's strongest units at that point. Also, Sigurd is normally the first character sent into the arena, thus he is the most likely to come across Holyn first. Aira, Alec, Noish, and Fin stand a fair chance of being able to best Holyn if the player has trained either of them rather a lot in Chapter 1, but not necessarily to the brink of promotion. Aira has a better chance of besting Holyn than the other three do, due to her Ryuuseiken (Meteor Sword) skill. Aira and Alec also have Mikiri (Awareness) skill, which negates Holyn's Gekkouken. Fin's Inoru (Prayer) also helps him to survive against Holyn if the player is lucky enough for him to get into the HP range it works. It requires somewhat less training to recruit Holyn using Aira than to recruit him using Alec, Noish, or Fin; training is mainly needed to boost her low defence, to stop Holyn from killing her in a couple of hits, whereas the other three need higher stats in several areas. Players who recruit Holyn using either of these characters may do so before promoting them, not that this affects anything. Cuan and Fin have the weapon triangle advantage over Holyn, while Lex is the opposite; FE4's weapon triangle does not have as much of an effect as it does in later games, however, and Lex is more held back by the weight of his axes. Most players of Fire Emblem: Seisen no Keifu pair Aira with Holyn or Lex, but some choose more esoteric pairings such as Aira/Noish or Aira/Levin, both of which give her children the Hissatsu (Critical) skill. Holyn is usually not paired with anyone other than Aira, who is arguably his best suitor, although there are debates over whether it wastes Holyn's growth rates and skills. Aira, Sylvia, and Brigid let Holyn pass Gekkouken onto Celice's generation. Aira lets him pass Gekkouken to both of her children, while Sylvia and Brigid each let him pass Gekkouken to only one of their children. Lachesis is a good suitor for Holyn, but she does not let him pass Gekkouken onto her children, as it only works with unmounted characters. Those who advocate this pairing use the fact that Gekkouken is uncontrollable as an argument for their case.
  • Machyua - From Fire Emblem: Thracia 776, she is the first female Oguma in Fire Emblem history. It is currently uncertain whether she should be called an Oguma or not. Even though she promotes to Mercenary, she has stats similar to that of Aira of Fire Emblem: Seisen no Keifu. However, since there has to be an Oguma in every game, and she's the only option available (Othin and Halvan starting off as axefighters, Ralf starting off promoted), she will have to do for the moment. Machyua was the first Ogma to be able to use axes after promotion.
  • Dieck - From Fire Emblem: Fuuin no Tsurugi. Deak used to work for Pent and Louise as a gladiator. He left them because he felt they were giving him too much attention and neglecting their son, Klein, and went to work as a mercenary. At the time he joins Roy, his group consists of himself, Lot, Ward, and Thannie.
  • Raven - From Fire Emblem: Rekka no Ken, he is the brother of Priscilla. He used to be called Raymond, but after the destruction of his noble house, he changed his name so he could infiltrate Ostia undetected. He plans on killing Hector as retribution for the loss of his title and family. Like Nabarls, he has a threatening introduction, and his introduction somewhat mirrors that of Aira, the Nabarl of Fire Emblem: Seisen no Keifu. He joins Eliwood and Hector along with his monk friend, Lucius.
  • Gerik (Jist) - From Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones, he is a friend of Innes (Hineas), and can have support with Marisa (Marika). He is the leader of his own group of mercenaries, and their members include Marisa and Tethys.
  • Stefan (alt. Soanevalcke) - From Fire Emblem: Souen no Kiseki. Stefan starts off with Souen's S-rank sword, the Vague Katti. He can only be recruited by Lethe or Mordecai; why that is is currently unknown. He is also the first Oguma to be a Swordmaster.

Oguma Characteristics

HP Growth Focus

Ogumas are known to focus stat growth on HP. They usually have high HP growth rates. Holyn has the highest growth rate of any Oguma, having 110% HP growth rate.
  • Ogumas who do not adhere to this principle:
    • Machyua: She has 60% HP growth rate, the lowest of any Oguma character. She has Nabarlish stats.

Rather High Strength Growth

Ogumas are known to have rather high strength growth rates, usually 40% to 55%.
  • Ogumas who do not adhere to this principle:
    • Holyn: He has 30% strength growth rate.
    • Machyua: Same reason as Holyn.

Resistance Growth Rate Progression

The Oguma archetype's magical resistance growth increases for every new entry to the Fire Emblem entries. The later the Fire Emblem entry means the higher the Oguma character's resistance growth rate. The exception is that the Oguma resistance growth rate remains unchanged between Dieck of Fire Emblem: Fuuin no Tsurugi and Raven of Fire Emblem: Rekka no Ken.
