Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic (Azerbaijani: Naxçıvan Muxtar Respublikası) is an Exclave of Azerbaijan. The area of 5,500 km² borders Armenia (221 km), Turkey (9 km) and Iran (179 km). It consists of 6 rayons: Babak, Julfa, Ordubad, Sadarak, Shahbuz and Sharur. The main city is Nakhichevan, home to the Nakhichevan State University.

Climate and Resources

The region is extremely arid and primarily a mountainous country with large salt deposits. With irrigation, agriculture produces cotton, tobacco, grain, and market garden produce, and in the drier areas sheep farming is significant. Minerals are extracted, including salt, molybdenum, and lead, while industries include cotton ginning/cleaning, silk spinning, fruit canning, meat packing, and tobacco products.

History

The city of Nakhichevan was mentioned firstly in Ptolemaios's "Geography" as Naksuana and said to be established in 4400 A.D.When we translate Naksuana from old greek language it means the land of sweet water.Being involved in empires, sultanate, and khanate the name of Nakhichevan was altered many times. Some of these names are: Nakshi jahan (the of the world), Nuh chikhan(the place where Noah landed), Nesheva and etc.Throughout history Nakhichevan land brought up famous persons such as Hindushah ibn Naxchivani, Abdurrakhman en Neshevi, Ekmouluddin Naxchivani, Ecemi Naxcivani, General Ehsan, Kelbali, Huseyinqulu khan Naxchivanskie's. This wonderfully atmospheric semi-desert region is separated from the main portion of Azerbaijan by Armenia. Facilities are very basic and heating fuel is hard to find in the winter, but the arid mountains bordering Armenia and Iran are magnificent. Laid waste by the Persians in the 4th century, Nakhichevan sank into comparative insignificance, but by the 10th century had largely recovered. Its geographic position caused it to suffer frequently during the wars between Persia and Ottoman Empire. Nakhichevan khanate emerged in 1747 after the death of Afshar ruler Nadir Shah. Following the Treaty of Turkmenchay after two Russo-Iranian wars Nakhichevan khanate passed into Russian possession in 1828. Due to dissatisfactin with Moskow's policies, parliament of the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic unilaterally declared independence in 1990 from the USSR, then later joined to the newly independent Republic of Azerbaijan. It now exists - and is internationally recognised - as a part of Azerbaijan with its own elected Parliament and chairman of the parliament.

Demographics

As of 1990, Nakhichevan's population was estimated to be 350,000. 98% of the population are Azeri. Ethnic Russians constituted the remaining population.

Disputes

  • Nakhichevan has been under blockade by Armenia since 1989. Route to mainland Azerbaijan is via international air coridor through Armenia and via Eastern Azerbaijan province of Iran, which has become unaffordable due to extremely unaffordable taxes imposed by the Islamic Republic of Iran.
  • Part of territory of Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic, the village of Karki, has been occupied by Armenia since 1989.
