In April 2005, a local businessman started a campaign to have the postcode changed to London E19, on the pretext that IG1 is not recognised as a London postcode. He argued that so doing would help local businesses. A Royal Mail spokesman, however, said campaigners in Ilford had "virtually no hope" of changing their postcode. .This move has the opposite motives to a group in London SE2 who wish to have their postcode changed to adjacent DA7 citing higher insurance for their houses, belongings and cars as reason to change. Royal Mail said they have never changed the first part of a postcode for these reasons.
