Governorate

A governorate is a Subnational entity. The term is mostly used to translate the Arabic muhafazah (plural muhafazat), also spelled mohafazah (mohafazat). It may also refer to the Governorates and Governor-Generalships of Imperial Russia (Russian: губерния, tr.: Guberniya).

Imperial Russia
Germany
During the time of the Third Reich a General Government for the occupied Polish areas, in German Generalgouvernement für die besetzten polnischen Gebiete existed. The German term is only rarely translated as General Governorate. The term is a traditional Prussian term.
