Culvert
Culvert
Blanchard
Category="Physical infrastructure"[image] A culvert is an enclosed flowing body of Water which generally passes underneath a Road, railway, or Embankment, or the part thereof that does so.
The culvert is the conduit through which the flow passes. Generally made of corrugated Steel, these culverts need to be replaced on a regular basis.
Problems
In the Pacific Northwest of the United States it has been found that many culverts impede upstream migration by Salmon. Research is being carried out to determine how culverts can be adapted to make it easier for salmon and other fish to pass through them against the current. When used to transport water in streams or rivers, the capacity of the culvert(s) is generally lower then the capacity of the river itself. This results in the water overflowing the road surface during heavy flow events. When this occurs on a regular basis, the culverts may be replaced with a different type of structure, such as a Bridge, that presents less obstruction to the flow of water.
