September - First of the major Jacobite Rebellions in Scotland against the rule of King George I. John Erskine, 22nd Earl of Mar raised the standard of James Francis Edward Stuart and marched on Edinburgh. James, the son of the deposed King James VII, briefly arrived from France, but left as it became clear that there was no support for him in England; he took Mar with him, but left most of his supporters behind.
